ABOUT FORUM
FORUM for kultur og internasjonalt samarbeid ble etablert i 2004 med mål om å tilby aktiviteter, opplæring og opplevelser innen kunst, musikk og litteratur til traumatiserte barn og unge i områder der estetiske fag ikke inngikk i skoleplanen. Stiftelseskapitalen var på 8 millioner kroner, som var privat kapital skaffet til veie av billedkunstner Sophie Rodin. Som en økonomisk uavhengig stiftelse sto vi fritt til å utarbeide ideer og mål for arbeidet.
Utgangspunktet for FORUMs tilblivelse var et besøk av palestinske unge dansere og musikere fra flyktningleiren Rashedieh i Sør-Libanon til Algarheim skole i Ullensaker i 2002. Besøket var initiert av Norwegian Aid Committee (NORWAC) ved daværende Libanon-koordinator, Kjersti Fiveland. Hensikten var å gi disse barna et avbrekk i en vanskelig hverdag og anledning til å møte verden utenfor den isolerte tilværelsen i leiren.
Fiveland og bildekunstner Sophie Rodin tok så initiativet til å opprette en stiftelse for å finansiere og drive et prosjekt innenfor musikk, kunst og litteratur i leiren, som en del av NORWACs Mental helse-prosjekt. Ved siden av disse to ble to musikere/musikkpedagoger, Vegar Storsve og Petter Barg, og Gro Gjestrud fra Algarheim skoles Libanon-gruppe med i styret fra starten av.
FORUMs engasjement har i årenes løp gradvis blitt bredere, både innholdsmessig og geografisk, og stiftelsen har nå mange samarbeidspartnere, blant annet Norges musikkhøgskole og flere skoler i Norge og Libanon. Vi utvidet tidlig helse-perspektivet med utgangspunkt i musikk til å inkludere vektlegging av kunstfagenes egenverdi og et videre aktivitetstilbud som også omfattet visuell kunst og bibliotekdrift. Vi startet i én leir, Rashedieh, men er nå engasjement i flere (to i nord og en i Beirut), samt i libanesiske NGO-skoler i Sør-Libanon. FORUM har også hatt et prosjekt i Uganda.
De siste årene har vi lagt større vekt på opplæring av lokale krefter som er i daglig kontakt med barna. I 2009 gikk FORUM, NORWAC, NMH og tre lokale samarbeidspartnere sammen om et treårig etterutdanningskurs for lærere, barnehagelærere og sosialarbeidere, som vi kalte X-art. 46 deltakere fikk opplæring i enten musikk, dans og drama, eller visuell kunst, litteratur og drama. Målet med programmet var å introdusere kunstfagene, både som metode i undervisningen og som selvstendige fag, og ikke minst å bidra til å bygge bro mellom parter i Libanon som tidligere ikke hadde hatt kontakt med hverandre på grunn av borgerkrigen og landets sekteriske oppdeling.
I 2018 avsluttet stiftelsen formelt sitt arbeid i Libanon. Enkeltpersoner i stiftelsens styre viderefører musikkprosjektet i samarbeid med lokale partnere. Stiftelsen er pr 2023 engasjert i mindre prosjekter, blant annet i Kenya og i Norge, og fortsetter publisering av relevante rapporter og bøker.

FORUM for Culture and International Cooperation was established in 2004 with the aim of offering activities, training and experiences in visual art, music and literature to traumatised children and youth in areas where aesthetical subjects are omitted from the school curriculum. The funding capital was 8 million NOK, which was private capital, raised by fine artist Sophie Rodin. As a financially independent foundation, we were free to define the goals for our work as we wished.
The basis for FORUM was a visit by Palestinian young dancers and musicians from the refugee camp Rashedieh, South-Lebanon, to Algarheim primary school, Norway in 2002. This visit was initiated by Norwegian Aid Committee (NORWAC) by their former coordinator for Lebanon, Kjersti Fiveland. The purpose of the visit was to give these children a break from a tough situation and an opportunity to meet the world outside the harsh and isolated life in the camp. Fiveland and Sophie Rodin then initiated the establishment of a foundation to fund and run a project on music, visual art and literature in the camp, as part of NORWAC’s Mental Health Project. In addition to Fiveland and Rodin, the two musicians/music educationists Vegar Storsve and Petter Barg, and Gro Gjestrud from Algarheim scool’s Lebanon Group joined the board from start.
The engagement of FORUM has broadened gradually over the years, both in terms of content and geography, and the foundation now has numerous partners, such as the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) and several schools in Norway and Lebanon. The health perspective based on music was early on broadened to emphasise the intrinsic value of the Arts and a wider range of activities including visual art and library facilities. We began our work in Raschedyieh, but are now engaged in several camps (two up north and one in Beirut), as well as in Lebanese NGO schools in the southern part of Lebanon. FORUM has also run a project in Uganda.
In recent years, we have shifted the focus towards the training of local resources being in daily contact with our target children. In 2009, FORUM, NORWAC, NMH and three local partners collectively established a 3 year long supplementary training for school and kindergarten teachers and social workers, called X-art. 46 participants received training either in music, dance and drama or in visual art, literature and drama. The aim of the X-art Programme was to introduce the Arts, both as a method in the general teaching and as independent subjects, and not least to contribute to building a bridge between Lebanese parties that had so far had little contact due to the civil war and the sectarian division of this country.
In 2018 the foundation formally ended its work in Lebanon though individuals on the foundation's board continue the music project in collaboration with local partners. As of 2023 the foundation is involved in smaller projects in Kenya and Norway and continues to publish relevant reports and books.
